Remember Alphonse Petit? He was also known as Albert Darmont. This street is named in his honor. Rue Albert Darmont in Champigny-sur-Marne. It commemorates a man who brought theater to the outdoors.

Albert Darmont was a French comedian and playwright. He was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman open-air theaters. This inspiration sparked an idea. He wanted to create a theater troupe. He wanted to perform in a renewed style.

In 1905, Darmont’s vision became reality. The Théâtre antique de la nature opened. It was located in Champigny-sur-Marne. The first performance took place on July 23. Four thousand people attended. Ministers and intellectuals were among the audience.

For nearly a decade, the theater thrived. Spectators came from Paris and nearby suburbs. They were drawn to Darmont’s unique performances. Then came World War I and Darmont’s death. These events marked the end of the theater.

Though the theater is gone, Darmont’s legacy lives on. His house in Champigny was preserved. More significantly, the street where his house stood was named Rue Albert Darmont.

Albert Darmont’s house still stands at number 25. It is known as Villa Darmont. The house was built in the second half of the 19th century. Darmont installed a green theater in the park. It opened in 1905.

The villa features a basement level. It has one square floor. The walls are made of millstone. Some are made of rubble without cut stone chains. The roofs are slate. They include terraces, long slopes, and conical towers.

The site is a private property. It is significant as the home of a famous man. The inventory highlights it as a notable residence. Rue Albert Darmont reminds us of Alphonse Petit. He was an actor and a dreamer. He brought the magic of theater to Champigny-sur-Marne. His open-air performances delighted thousands. Though his theater is now gone, his street keeps his memory alive.
