“A world-class education” That’s what the brochure promised. Here we stand before Hertswood Academy. It’s more than just bricks and mortar though.

Hertswood Academy didn’t always exist. It replaced Hertswood School. This impressive building wasn’t always here. It began as a simple amalgamation of five local schools in 2000. It then gained academy status in 2013. Imagine the transformation.

The new academy opened in January 2013. It initially used existing buildings. Then came the ambitious expansion. Construction on the new buildings began in summer 2016. It finished in 2018. The modern structure you see today is the result of that massive project.

Hertswood Academy isn’t just about academics. It boasts a state-of-the-art theatre. This impressive facility seats 250. The ARK Theatre even has public access. There’s a sports centre too. It includes a large sports hall and a dance studio. The facilities are available for community use. This makes Hertswood Academy a hub for the entire Borehamwood community.

The academy provides a top-notch education for 1200 students. They range from eleven to sixteen years old. An additional 200 post-sixteen students further enrich the learning environment. It’s a mixed gender school. That’s been true since its inception as an academy. Peter Gillett was the headteacher for many years.

The academy’s current address is Cowley Hill Borehamwood Hertfordshire WD6 5LG. The school’s capacity is 1861 pupils. However currently around 1151 students attend. Around 27% of those pupils are eligible for free school meals. This highlights the diverse socio-economic background of the student population. A testament to Hertswood’s inclusive ethos.

The Hertswood Academy isn’t merely a school. It’s a testament to community spirit. A place where education flourishes. It is a place where dreams are nurtured. A place where a brighter future is built. This is Hertswood Academy.
