The soaring minaret of Masjid Al-Ansar pierces the sky. It’s a sight that has witnessed decades of devotion. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith of a community. Masjid Al-Ansar a cornerstone of Bedok North. Its story begins not in grandeur but in a simple meeting. A few community leaders dreamt of a place of worship. Their vision a mosque in the heart of the burgeoning Bedok estate. This was in 1974. The estate was new. Many Muslim residents had relocated. They came from Changi and Telok Paku. These areas made way for Changi Airport’s development. Others moved from Geylang Serai Kampung Ubi and Eunos. All these areas were transformed by urban development. The community needed a central place for prayer and community.
The dream took shape. The Mosque Building Committee formed. They received initial funding from MUIS. They chose a name. Masjid Al-Ansar. It means “The Helpers”. It honored the Medinan people. They helped Prophet Muhammad and the Muhajirin. The name reflected the community’s spirit. People helping each other. Building something together.
The mosque’s construction was a collective effort. It took seven years from 1974 to 1981. It was built under the Mosque Building Fund Programme. The original mosque was stunning. It featured a large dome. It could accommodate 3500 worshippers. The opening ceremony was a momentous occasion. Dr Ahmad Mattar the Minister in-charge of Muslim Affairs officiated. The mosque quickly became a hub for the community. Daily prayers Friday prayers and madrasah classes took place. It served as a vital community centre.
But time marches on. The mosque aged. The community grew. In 2011 a major renovation was announced. It started in 2012. The transformation was extensive. The project lasted almost three years. The only remaining part of the original mosque was the minaret. It was ingeniously converted into an elevator shaft. The upgraded Masjid Al-Ansar reopened in April 2015.
Today Masjid Al-Ansar is a beacon of modern Islamic architecture. It boasts seven floors. It has a basement car park. It features barrier-free access. It includes ramps and a dedicated family prayer area. The capacity now stands at 4500 people. Masjid Al-Ansar stands as a symbol of enduring faith. It demonstrates the strength of community and the power of vision. It’s more than a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the people who built it and the generations it continues to serve.
