Consider the ochre building before you. It stands as a testament to a community’s past. This is the Rákospalota Synagogue. Once a vibrant center for Neolog Jewish worship it now serves a different purpose.

The Rákospalota Synagogue’s story began with the independence of the Rákospalota Jewish community in 1902. However the synagogue itself was completed later. The Jewish community decided to erect a dedicated space. Construction started in 1926 and concluded in 1927. Mihály Feith and Gábor Feith designed this building. Their vision resulted in the distinctive structure we see today.

Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Michael Dushinsky led the community from 1898. He served for 41 years. His leadership fostered respect for the community. To fund construction a Book-of-Blessings was published in 1926. It featured a drawing of the planned facade.

Note the triangular facade. It is marked by an arched portal. Observe the row of thin arched windows. Notice the two low cupola-topped square towers. Above all, the central rose window with its Star of David is prominent.

Tragedy struck after World War II. The Jewish community was decimated by the Nazis. The Rákospalota Synagogue became depopulated. By the 1960s the building transitioned to profane use. It became a map warehouse. Later in the 1980s the National Széchényi Library acquired it. Since then it has been used as one of the library’s warehouses.

Today the Rákospalota Synagogue functions as a book storage facility. The interior no longer echoes with prayers. Instead it houses countless volumes of Hungarian literature and knowledge. While its religious function ceased decades ago its architectural presence remains. It is a reminder of Rákospalota’s diverse past. The building stands on Old Fóti Road in the XVth district of Budapest. It is a short distance from the corner of Szentmihályi Road.

Although the Rákospalota Synagogue is no longer a place of worship it carries significant history. It serves as a landmark. It represents the story of the Rákospalota Jewish community. Its survival and adaptation provide a poignant lesson. The Rákospalota Synagogue serves as a reminder of resilience. It connects the past and present.
