Beneath the bustling streets of Istanbul lies a hidden gem. The Yeraltı Camii also known as the Underground Mosque. This is no ordinary mosque. Its prayer hall and main features are all underground. Imagine its history stretching back centuries.

Originally a Byzantine fortress cellar the Yeraltı Camii has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. After the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 it served as an ammunition store and a water cistern. Then in 1753 Ottoman vizier Köse Bahir Mustafa Pasha transformed it into a mosque. Three cenotaphs for holy men were added the same year.

An earthquake in 1754 devastated the structure. Sultan Mahmud I ordered its reconstruction. Completed in 1756 the Yeraltı Camii stands as a testament to resilience. It even had a minaret once but it’s gone now.

The mosque’s underground chambers house tombs. These are said to belong to two Sahaba companions of the Prophet Muhammad and a Tabi’ al-Tabi’een. Local legends claim these figures were captured during an attempted invasion of Constantinople and met a tragic end. Their cenotaphs enclosed by an iron grille with glass windows remain. The tombs were added in 1753. A Naqshbandi dervish dreamt of them.

However these legends present some interesting challenges. One tomb is dedicated to Amr ibn al-As. He died in Egypt. Another is dedicated to Wahb ibn Husayra. There is little to no historical record of this Sahaba. Similarly Sufyan ibn Uyaynah whose tomb is also within the Yeraltı Camii is known to have died in Mecca. Despite these historical discrepancies the local traditions surrounding these tombs add to the mosque’s mystical aura.

The Yeraltı Camii is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Istanbul’s rich and layered history. It’s a place where layers of history intertwine. Byzantine foundations Ottoman transformation and enduring local legends. It’s a place that will leave you with a lasting sense of wonder. Explore its subterranean depths.
