Lindehøj Kirke. A modern marvel amidst the historical tapestry of Copenhagen. This isn’t your typical ancient church steeped in centuries of tradition. Lindehøj Kirke stands as a testament to community spirit and modern architectural design. It was built in 1969, a relatively young age for a church. Lindehøj Kirke serves a large and vibrant congregation of nearly 17,000 people, making Lindehøj Sogn one of the largest parishes in Denmark. The church’s story is deeply intertwined with the growth of the surrounding community. In the late 1950s and onwards, Herlev Kommune experienced a significant population boom. This growth spurred the need for a new church in the western part of the municipality. A dedicated group of individuals, inspired by similar efforts in another part of Herlev, began organizing religious activities. These started with bible study groups. Later, with support from the Herlev Parish Council, regular services were held at Borgedigeskolen. A church committee was formed in November 1964. Their goal was to build a dedicated church for the western part of Herlev Kommune. Originally, the committee had to raise 50% of the funds themselves. However, a change in law, influenced by large-scale construction projects in Høje Gladsaxe, allowed churches to be financed through church tax. This simplified the funding process for Lindehøj Kirke. Even with this change, restrictions on public building budgets led the committee to work with architect Holger Jensen. Together they created a cost-effective design that could be built with the help of volunteers. Fifty-three individuals pledged to dedicate an evening a week to the construction of their church. Despite the building restrictions being lifted, these volunteers remained committed to their self-build project. Lindehøj Kirke’s construction began in November 1967. It involved demolishing existing structures on the land donated by the municipality. Even the materials from the demolished buildings were incorporated into the new church wherever possible. The church committee managed the project, which cost 876,000 kroner for the initial phase. This initial structure was intended as a small, intimate church for what was then a parish of about 4-5,000 people. No one predicted the explosive growth of Lindehøj Sogn. The church was officially inaugurated on October 5, 1969. Lindehøj Kirke stands not just as a place of worship, but as a symbol of community, resilience, and the evolving landscape of faith.
