Heinrich Wilhelm Matthias Olbers, born in 1758, practiced medicine by day and explored the cosmos by night. This statue, crafted by Carl Steinhäuser in 1848, depicts Olbers holding a telescope, a symbol of his celestial pursuits. Look closely at the base. You’ll find four intricate reliefs. One shows him as an astronomer, guided by a winged genius. Another portrays him as a doctor, tending to a patient. The other two reliefs depict Pallas Athene and Vesta, the namesakes of the two asteroids he discovered. Olbers’ contributions to astronomy were significant. He devised a method for calculating cometary orbits. He discovered both Pallas and Vesta, further fueling the quest to understand the vast expanse beyond our planet.
