“380” A number etched into the stone. What secrets does it hold? This is Fort de Saint-Irénée. Built between 1832 and 1842 it’s part of Lyon’s first defensive ring. A pentagon of stone 150 by 180 meters. It once housed almost 800 men. Imagine the bustle the sounds of boots on cobblestones. The soldiers lived here. They ate in the canteen slept in their barracks. Their horses were stabled nearby. The fort even had a laundry and kitchen. A powder magazine held 22 tons of powder enough to supply 60 cannons. This increased to 42 tons by 1880. A testament to its strategic importance. But Fort de Saint-Irénée wasn’t just a military outpost. After its military service ended it had a remarkable transformation. The Franco-Chinese Institute found a home here from 1920 to 1946. Imagine students from China studying in Lyon within these very walls. Later a university residence took over. Today the ENSATT a renowned theatre school occupies the space. A small section is home to the regional office of ONISEP. The fort holds a secret. It incorporates remnants of the Roman aqueduct of the Gier. This section is listed as a historic monument. But that “380” What does it mean? Some believe it’s an altitude measurement in feet relative to the Saône river. Others suggest it’s a negative altitude relative to a higher point possibly Fort du Mont-Verdun.
