Did General Las Heras ever imagine a town would bear his name? Here in General Las Heras, a town northwest of Buenos Aires, his legacy lives on. This bustling town, established in 1864, pulsates with life. It’s a far cry from the battlefields where General Las Heras earned his fame. Juan Gregorio de Las Heras, born in Buenos Aires in 1780, was more than just a namesake for this town. He was a key figure in the fight for South American independence. Las Heras cut his teeth in the military during the British invasions of Buenos Aires. He rose through the ranks, eventually leading troops across the Andes with San Martín. His leadership was crucial in the battles for Chilean and Peruvian independence. At Chacabuco, his strategic prowess secured a vital victory. His quick thinking saved half the army at Cancha Rayada, setting the stage for the decisive win at Maipú. After the liberation of Peru, Las Heras returned to Argentina. He served as governor of Buenos Aires from 1824 to 1826, championing progressive policies. He even signed a treaty with England, formally recognizing Argentina’s independence. He later returned to Chile, a land he had helped liberate. There, surrounded by fellow exiles and opponents of Rosas, he continued to advocate for a free Argentina. He died in Santiago in 1866. Years later, his remains were returned to Buenos Aires. They now rest in the Metropolitan Cathedral, beside the mausoleum of his comrade, San Martín. General Las Heras, the man, may be gone. But his spirit resonates in the vibrant community that bears his name. Here in General Las Heras, the echoes of his battles for freedom continue to inspire.
