The Rizal Monument is located in Rizal Park. It’s a memorial to José Rizal. He was a Filipino nationalist. The Spanish colonial authorities executed him. That happened on December 30, 1896.

Look closely at the monument’s details. The bronze statue of Rizal stands tall. He is holding a book. The book is said to represent Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

Behind Rizal is a marble obelisk. It rises over 12 meters high. The obelisk is topped with a pyramid. It is decorated with three stars. They are said to represent Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. These are the three main geographical regions of the Philippines.

On one side of the Rizal Monument is a statue of a mother and her child. On the other side is a statue of two boys reading. These statues represent family and education.

The Rizal Monument’s history is interesting. It was planned during the American colonial period. American officials appreciated Rizal’s writings. They realized his importance to the Filipino people.

In 1901, the United States Philippine Commission decided to build a memorial to Rizal. They allocated public land for the monument. The act specified that the memorial would include a statue. It would also be the final resting place for his remains.

An international design competition was held. Sculptors from Europe and the United States submitted entries. The contract was awarded to Swiss sculptor Richard Kissling.

The Rizal Monument was unveiled on December 30, 1913. That was exactly 17 years after Rizal’s death. His remains were laid to rest under the pedestal of the monument.

The monument is guarded 24 hours a day. Honor guard sentries stand stiffly to attention. On one side of the monument is a marble plaque. It marks the spot where Rizal met his death.

An exact replica of the Rizal Monument can be found in Madrid, Spain. It is at the intersection of Avenida de Las Islas Filipinas and Calle Santander.
