Ruschdahlmoor a protected area in the Lesum district is a remarkable 48 hectares. Designated as a nature reserve on October 8 1991 it holds a special place in Bremen’s environmental history. It’s number 12 in the city’s register of protected areas.
Around 9000 years ago sinkholes appeared. These were created by the collapse of cavities in an underlying salt deposit. The resulting depressions became the perfect cradle for a unique ecosystem. As peat accumulated the ground continued to sink. This allowed the moor to grow upward creating these impressive peat layers.
Today Ruschdahlmoor is a haven of biodiversity. Though surrounded by housing narrow protected strips separate it from development. Within its boundaries you find a diversity of plant life.
