How often do you think about the strategic importance of a highway interchange? I introduce you to Imajuku IC. This unassuming junction plays a vital role in connecting Fukuoka to other key areas. It is a crucial part of the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway.

Imajuku IC facilitates travel between Fukuoka and Takeo. The expressway stretches 150 km. It runs through Saga Prefecture and northern Nagasaki Prefecture. This makes Imajuku IC a vital artery for regional transportation.

The Nishi-Kyushu Expressway is also known as Route 497. It features two toll zones and sections managed by MLIT. Imajuku IC connects to National Route 202. This connection ensures easy access to and from the expressway.

The expressway’s construction began in 1988. Many sections were still incomplete as of April 2016. The Imabuku Interchange to Tsukinokawa Interchange section opened in 2017. The Minamihata Taniguchi Interchange to Imari Higashi Interchange section also opened that year.

A new system now governs most incomplete areas. The New Direct Control System shares construction costs. National and local governments bear the burden. No tolls are collected in these sections. This reduces the financial impact on drivers.

From Fukushige Junction to Higashi Intersection the expressway is four lanes wide. It is also four lanes from Saza Interchange to Sasebo Chuo Interchange. The remaining sections are two lanes wide.

The history of the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway is one of gradual expansion. The section from Fukushige Junction to Imajuku IC opened on October 13, 2001. In November 2003, the section was widened to four lanes.

Imajuku IC is more than just a road junction. It is a key point in a network that supports travel and commerce. As you pass through, consider the planning and effort that went into creating this essential piece of infrastructure. It keeps Fukuoka connected.
