“Have you ever felt the serenity of a neoclassical church? The Église des Carmes in Monaco beckons you into its peaceful embrace. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and architectural beauty.

The Église des Carmes stands as a beacon of spirituality in Monaco. It wasn’t always here in its present form. Its story is one of displacement rebuilding and enduring faith.

Originally built in the first half of the 20th century the first Église des Carmes served the Carmelite community. These priests initially found refuge in Monaco. They had been expelled from their sanctuary in Laghet in 1903. This was due to the anticlerical decree of Émile Combes. Monaco offered them hospitality. The Carmelites built a church and a theology college. Their presence in Monaco’s religious landscape has been uninterrupted ever since.

The original church held a Cavaillé-Coll organ a historical monument. It is considered one of the finest in France. The organ was carefully restored and relocated to the mezzanine in the rebuilt church. The original church was later demolished to make way for a larger project.

This wasn’t the end though. The people of Monaco and friends of the Carmelite community petitioned for a new church. Prince Rainier III intervened. He ensured the church wouldn’t be closed. A new Carmelite community from Spain arrived. They took over the site.

The new Église des Carmes was consecrated on April 28 2002. Architect Fabrice Notari designed this smaller but still elegant structure. It is dedicated to Saint Therese of Lisieux. It’s also known as the Chapelle des Carmes. The stained-glass windows depict Saint Therese’s life. They are the work of the renowned Fassi Cadet masters. These same artisans created the stunning windows in Sainte-Dévote Church. The windows bring a harmonious light to the interior. They create an atmosphere of serenity.

The Église des Carmes is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of faith resilience and Monaco’s rich history. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Carmelite order and the people of Monaco. Step inside. Let the peaceful atmosphere wash over you. You might just feel the spiritual strength that resonates within these walls.”
