Peñarol isn’t just a neighborhood in Montevideo. It’s a living legend. Its story begins not with a stadium or a founding charter but with a man. Giovanni Battista Crosa. An Italian immigrant who opened a pulpería a general store. It became a hub for fellow countrymen. They spoke of their hometowns. Crosa himself became known as Piñerol a name that evolved into Peñarol. His son’s christening certificate bore the name Crosa Peñarol. The name stuck. The entire area became known as Peñarol.
A century later British railway workers arrived. They built the Central Uruguay Railway. They built a station in Peñarol. On September 28 1891 they formed the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club or CURCC. The team adopted the yellow and black of the Rocket locomotive. Yet within months the locals and press started calling the team Peñarol. It reflected the neighborhood’s identity. Italian descendants like Vittori and Mazzuco played for the team. It connected to the community’s roots. On December 13 1913 the football section officially became CURCC Peñarol. A few months later in March 1914 it became Club Atlético Peñarol.
