In 1924 the building underwent a significant transformation. Three floors were added in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Arches gargoyles and a sculpture of the Virgin of Guadalupe adorn the facade. The interior was lavishly decorated with thousands of talavera tiles and elegant iron-forged handrails. A rooftop terrace was added in the 1930s reflecting the then-popular Art Deco style. Geometrized battlements and small domes crowned this unique addition.

For years the building housed the Hotel Ontario. This continued until the 1980s when the 1985 earthquake and deterioration of the surrounding area forced its closure.
