“Did you know there was once a ‘tin hut’ church here?” Right here, at Broomwood Methodist Church. Before this beautiful building graced the corner of Broomwood Road, the first congregation worshipped in a humble temporary structure. That was back in 1897, when the area bustled with construction near Clapham Common. The new Broomwood Methodist Church, a grand affair, opened its doors in 1900. Sadly, two World Wars took a toll on the church, claiming the lives of many members across generations. Their names, etched in the memorial window, serve as poignant reminders. In the 1980s, faced with dwindling numbers, the church made a difficult decision. They sold the land where the grand church once stood and built a new, smaller sanctuary – the one we see today. The heart of Broomwood Methodist Church, however, continued to beat strong. Today, Broomwood Methodist Church stands as a testament to resilience, a place where history intertwines with faith, welcoming a diverse congregation from all corners of the world.
