Is this a mirage? Passage Bourdeau appears almost deserted, a hidden gem tucked away from the bustling streets of Paris. Passage Bourdeau is a portal to a bygone era. It’s a covered walkway, a relic of a time when such passages were the height of Parisian chic. This passage, however, is no mere architectural relic. It whispers tales of a time when Paris was a whirlwind of change. Built in 1828, Passage Bourdeau is relatively short, stretching a mere 43 meters. It once reached the Passage de l’Ancre, but the construction of the Boulevard de Sébastopol truncated its original length. Despite its diminished size, it retains a unique charm. Look up! Notice the mezzanine level, adorned with original ornamentation, a testament to its rich past. The entrance on Rue de Palestro is particularly noteworthy. Designed in 1863 by Henri Blondel, the architect behind the grand Bourse de Commerce, it’s a masterpiece in miniature. Blondel adorned the entrance with powerful figures of Atlantis, symbolizing the vibrant trade and industry that once thrived within the passage’s walls. The caryatids, sculpted by Aimé Millet, who also created the Grand Apollon of the Opéra Garnier, are not to be missed. These allegorical figures represent trade and industry. Look closely and you’ll spot the anchor, a nod to the Merchant Navy, and intricate machine parts, symbols of a burgeoning industrial age. Passage Bourdeau may be quiet now, but its walls still echo with the spirit of its vibrant past.
