Diagonal bracing, a striking feature sets One Maritime Plaza apart. This tower stands as a testament to architectural innovation and resilience. Let’s explore the story of One Maritime Plaza.

One Maritime Plaza is located in San Francisco’s Financial District. It rises near the Embarcadero Center towers. The building was originally named the Alcoa Building. Alcoa Corporation commissioned it. One Maritime Plaza completed construction in 1967. It reaches a height of 398 feet. That is about 121 meters. It offers 25 floors of office space. The plaza around One Maritime Plaza was also finished in 1967.

One Maritime Plaza is among the first buildings to use external seismic bracing. These trusses and X-braces are crucial for earthquake resistance. The unique structural system reflects a blend of aesthetics and functionality.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, One Maritime Plaza has floorplates of approximately 21,000 square feet. These plates provide expansive views. From One Maritime Plaza you can see the city and the bay.

One Maritime Plaza is set on top of a three-level public garage. The garage roof is two stories above street level. This design incorporates the tower entrance lobby and landscaped plazas. A sculptural fountain and four gardens enhance the surroundings. You can access these features via open flights of stairs and escalators.

The external diagonal bracing serves dual purposes. It resists seismic forces. It also partially supports the vertical load. The bracing is set 18 inches outside the curtain wall. This enhances the building’s architectural identity.

The concept behind One Maritime Plaza’s structural system evolved through collaboration. Architectural designers sought a building with strong structural integration. Structural engineers aimed for an economical solution against earthquake damage.

Only the columns rising directly from the ground function as main columns. These columns are spaced 50 feet apart. Interstitial vertical members and the diagonal bracing end above the entrance floor. The diagonals connect to the floor plates every third floor. They further connect to suspended tension members. These connections occur where they intersect between the main columns every six floors. This design reduces the weight of the structural steel. It allows for more usable interior space.

One Maritime Plaza has undergone changes over the years. In 2003, retrofitting aimed to reinforce the structure against seismic activity. While these changes faced some criticism, they were essential for safety.

In recent years, One Maritime Plaza has embraced sustainability. It became San Francisco’s first hybrid electric building. This initiative reflects a commitment to clean energy.

The plaza around One Maritime Plaza features public art. This privately owned space offers a peaceful retreat. It welcomes everyone from bankers to those experiencing homelessness.

In December 2018, Google leased 190,000 square feet in One Maritime Plaza. This further solidified the building’s importance in San Francisco’s Financial District.

One Maritime Plaza stands not just as an office tower. It represents innovation, resilience, and a commitment to public space. Its unique design and historical significance make it a landmark in San Francisco. As we conclude our visit to One Maritime Plaza, reflect on its architectural ingenuity. Think about its contribution to the city’s skyline.
