Whispers of reformation echoed through the grand halls of the Ev. Kirche in Karlsruhe. Did you know that even though Martin Luther never set foot in Karlsruhe, his influence shaped this very church? The Ev. Kirche, originally envisioned as a cathedral for the state of Baden, stands as a testament to the intertwining of history and faith. Grand Duke Karl Friedrich, a key figure in the church’s creation, insisted on a bell tower, a feature not typically found in Greek temples which architect Friedrich Weinbrenner used as his inspiration. The original Ev. Kirche, consecrated in 1816, was tragically destroyed during World War II. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was meticulously rebuilt, reopening its doors in 1958. The resurrected Ev. Kirche boasts a lighter, more spacious interior. A striking light band along the walls draws the eye upwards to the vaulted ceiling. The altar and pulpit, crafted from black marble, command attention. The baptismal font and altar cross are the work of sculptor Otto Herbert Hajek. Look up and admire the vibrant windows by Georg Meistermann and Professor Hildenbrand. The grand Steinmeyer organ, with its 73 registers and nearly 4500 pipes, fills the space with powerful melodies during concerts. The Ev. Kirche also houses a smaller R\u00e9my-Mahler organ, a tribute to Andreas Silbermann whose original organ, from Villingen, graced the church until its destruction. The church’s tower, reaching a height of 61.70 meters, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Karlsruhe. The tower houses five bells, cast by the Bachert company, harmonizing with the bells of St. Stephan. Atop the tower, the Friedensengel, or “Peace Angel,” stands as a symbol of hope and resilience. The Ev. Kirche stands as more than just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of Karlsruhe’s spirit, a testament to its endurance through trials, and a vibrant hub of community life.
