“A mechanical jewel” they called it. That’s how many described the Maison du Peuple. Right here before us stands this architectural marvel.

This isn’t just any building. This is the Maison du Peuple in Clichy a testament to a unique moment in architectural history. Built between 1935 and 1939 it was the brainchild of Mayor Charles Auffray. His aim was simple to cover the Marché de Lorraine the Lorraine Market. But architects Eugène Beaudouin and Marcel Lods along with engineer Vladimir Bodiansky and the ateliers of Jean Prouvé had a much bolder vision.

They imagined more than just a market cover. They conceived a transformable space a building capable of changing its own layout multiple times a day. Jean Prouvé’s technical ingenuity was key. He provided solutions ensuring transparency and movement. Partitions floors and even the roof were designed to be modular. Amazing right?

Think of it as a giant machine. Malo De Courville an engineer and architect explains it perfectly. It’s an example of modern architecture an almost utopian ideal. Interestingly the movable floors almost never worked. The architects wanted to make them functional at least once for history’s sake. During the restoration those mechanisms will be activated.

After the war the Maison du Peuple thrived. The ground floor housed the Marché de Lorraine. Upstairs a 500-seat cinema held public meetings parties and even theatrical performances. In 1951 Gérard Philipe a famous actor even performed here. By 1983 its architectural significance earned it a place as a listed historical monument.

Over time the building deteriorated. Water damage was severe making much of it unusable. Expensive repairs seemed impossible. Then in 2015 Mayor Rémi Muzeau sought ways to save it. In 2021 Alain Ducasse the renowned chef visited. He fell in love with the building. He bought it. In 2024 restoration began.

The Maison du Peuple will be reborn. It will house Ducasse Paris’s workshops. Four manufactures chocolate coffee ice cream and biscuits will be visible from the outside. There’ll be a restaurant and a cafe. An area dedicated to its history will be created. The first floor unused for decades will be revived. It will become a culinary laboratory blending history architecture and creativity. The opening is planned for late 2026. This architectural gem is far from its end. Its story continues.
