Gazing out at the rhythmic dance of waves at Edward Street Beach, one might wonder about the stories held within its sandy embrace. Edward Street Beach stretches along the coastline, a place of serene beauty and dynamic change. It’s a beach of two halves. The northern part welcomes visitors with easy access and the watchful eye of the Sandringham Life Saving Club. The southern half, however, whispers tales of erosion and dramatic bluffs rising towards Red Bluff. Seawalls and groynes stand as silent witnesses to the ongoing battle against the relentless power of the sea. Shallow reefs, remnants of the eroding bluffs, lie beneath the waves, adding an element of intrigue to the waters. The northern section of Edward Street Beach offers a welcoming expanse of sand, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a refreshing dip. Facilities like showers, water taps, and toilets are conveniently located near the Sandringham Life Saving Club. But be mindful of the rocky outcrops scattered in the water and a drain pipe near the club. South of the life saving club, a promenade gives way to a narrower, rockier stretch of beach. Wooden stairs ascend to the road atop the cliff, offering a dramatic view of the coastline. Further south, sandy patches interspersed with rocks and stormwater drains invite exploration, but the northern part remains the preferred spot for swimming. Edward Street Beach, also known as the southern part of Sandringham beach, is accessible via steps around Royal Avenue. Free parking can be found in side streets off Beach Road. A sandy arc, framed by a groyne and a headland, hugs the cliffs, protected by a fence. Towards the southern end, a concrete path descends from the cliff opposite Edwards Street. As you reach the southernmost point, a rocky outcrop emerges from the water near a drain pipe. The sand grows coarser, and the shallow water stretches out invitingly. Massive concrete blocks, embedded in the high cliff face, hint at a forgotten purpose. At low tide, adventurous souls can venture around Red Bluff to reach the secluded Half Moon Bay. For those with canine companions, Edward Street Beach welcomes dogs, but with some restrictions. Between November 1st and March 31st, dogs are allowed off-leash only from 7:30 pm to 10 am. From April 1st to October 31st, they can enjoy the freedom of the beach at all times. So, whether you seek the lively atmosphere of the northern section or the rugged beauty of the south, Edward Street Beach offers a unique coastal experience.
