Why is this charming town named after a woman who never even lived here? Welcome to Dyer, Indiana, a town with a history as rich as the soil that first attracted settlers to the area. You see, Dyer wasn’t always the bustling suburb of Chicago it is today. Back in the 1830s, it was all dense woodland and marshes, home to the Potawatomi people. But the promise of fertile land proved irresistible, and soon, European settlers, many of them Prussian farmers, arrived to carve out their own piece of the American dream. The turning point came in 1857 when the Michigan Central Railroad decided to lay down tracks right through here. This put Dyer on the map, and it wasn’t long before a savvy businessman named Aaron Hart saw the potential. Hart, a publisher from Philadelphia, purchased a huge swathe of land, envisioning a thriving community. He got to work, overseeing the construction of roads and, most importantly, drainage systems to make the fertile but swampy land usable. While he tragically died in 1883, his legacy lived on, but not in the way you might expect. You see, while the town bears the last name of his wife, Martha Dyer Hart, she actually never resided here. Nonetheless, Dyer, Indiana, flourished. The railroads brought businesses and opportunity. The “Ideal Section” of the Lincoln Highway, an experimental stretch of road built in the 1920s, put Dyer at the forefront of American transportation. Today, Dyer blends its small-town charm with its proximity to Chicago, a testament to the vision of those early settlers and the woman whose name, though she was not physically present, is forever etched into its story.
