Did Pastor Brunn ever imagine the future of Saint John Lutheran Church as he stood at its pulpit in 1877? Originally known as St. John’s – Mayfair, Saint John Lutheran Church has witnessed remarkable transformations since its humble beginnings in 1875. Picture this: a small group of German immigrants gathering for services led by Reverend A. Detzer, Sr. from Des Plaines. Their faith led to the official organization of the congregation on October 3, 1875. As more Volga German immigrants arrived in the Jefferson Park and Mayfair neighborhoods starting in 1888, Saint John Lutheran Church became a cornerstone of their community. The church’s first structure, built in 1876 on Montrose Avenue near Milwaukee Avenue, was a modest frame building. It housed not only the sanctuary but also the school and pastor’s apartment in its brick foundation. Over time, Saint John Lutheran Church expanded and evolved. The congregation grew, necessitating an addition to the original structure in 1890. This expansion increased the seating capacity and marked the installation of the church’s first pipe organ. In 1903, a group of families from Saint John Lutheran Church went on to establish St. Paul’s Church on Canfield Avenue. The continuous growth and change also led to the construction of a new parsonage in 1911. A few years later, in 1915, a dedicated parish school was built, complete with four classrooms and a playroom. A significant milestone in the history of Saint John Lutheran Church was the construction of its magnificent limestone edifice in 1930. The beautiful art windows, the carved altar, and the original bell from the old church all contributed to the grandeur of the new space. Further expansions and renovations continued throughout the years. A school addition in 1957, the Blanke Center in 1980, and a major renovation in 2000, which included a new Berghaus pipe organ, demonstrate the ongoing commitment to the church’s mission. Today, Saint John Lutheran Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of its founders. With over 700 members, it continues to offer a place for learning, growing, and connecting through various fellowship opportunities. From its humble beginnings to its present glory, Saint John Lutheran Church has been more than just a building. It has served as a spiritual home and a beacon of hope for generations.
