Doesn’t the name Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi just roll off your tongue? This sacred place stands as a testament to Bali’s rich history. It is a cultural cornerstone in Denpasar.
Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi has roots that stretch back to the Kingdom of Brangsinga. This kingdom once watched over southern Bali when Denpasar was still a wilderness. According to our elders, this very spot was the heart of Brangsinga. Even though the kingdom fell in battle, its sanctity remained. The succeeding Kingdom of Badung honored it.
But the story doesn’t end there. Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi also has links to Arya Kanuruhan. He was a state secretary in the 14th century after Majapahit conquered Bali. Arya Kanuruhan had sons. One was Arya Brangsinga. Arya Brangsinga’s descendants resided here in what is now Banjar Sebelanga. It was Arya Brangsinga who truly secured the southern lands. Back then, Jimbaran was considered unsafe.
Today, Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi is managed by six banjars from the Denpasar Adat Village. These banjars come from Dauh Puri Kauh and Pemecutan Kelod. More importantly, Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi serves a unique purpose. Other temples across Bali come here to ask for taksu. Taksu is divine essence for their palawatan. Palawatan are sacred objects like barong and rangda.
Jero Mangku Wayan Cika is the caretaker of Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi. He explained that the pura has a special palinggih taksu. This shrine sits next to the gedong panyimpenan. The gedong holds the palawatan Ratu Gede. Ratu Gede takes the form of a barong ket. Many patapakan come to this pura. They bring their followers to seek blessings and taksu. They seek it from Ida Bhatara-Bhatari for their own palawatan. These visitors come from places like Canggu, Kuta, and Begawan.
The palawatan that visit Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi are not empty vessels. They have already undergone rituals like pasupati and ngereh. Once purified, the palawatan are considered complete. Some even come here to seek taru. One example is the sasuhunan from Puri Jrokuta. After all the rites are complete, they return here. They seek blessings from Ida Dalem. Ida Dalem resides in the gedong in the center.
Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi can be considered one of Denpasar’s three main temples. The krama from the six banjars still center their Pura Desa and Puseh. Yet, they keep their Kahyangan Dalem at Pura Dalem Tegeh Gumi. This pura was once known as Pura Dalem Kentel Gumi. It remains a vital spiritual center in Denpasar. Its history echoes through the ages. It connects us to Bali’s ancient kingdoms and traditions.
