Dust swirled around the hooves of phantom chariots. Can you hear the roar of the crowd at the Hippodrome of Berytus? This isn’t just an empty space. It’s a ghost track, echoing with the cheers of ancient Beirut. The Hippodrome of Berytus was more than just a place for chariot races. It was a social hub, a political arena, and a testament to the grandeur of Roman Berytus. Built near the port and forum, the Hippodrome of Berytus was one of the largest in the Levant. Imagine a sprawling 3500 square meters bustling with activity. This hippodrome, much like the Circus Maximus in Rome, featured starting gates, a double track, and a semicircular end. Chariot racing wasn’t just a sport; it was a spectacle. Factions clashed, bets were placed, and fortunes were won and lost within these very walls. The Hippodrome of Berytus held its own among the best racing circuits in the Levant. Think Antioch, Laodicea, Caesarea, and Tyre – Berytus was right there with them. But like many grand structures of the Byzantine era, the Hippodrome of Berytus eventually fell victim to political unrest and dwindling resources. The cheers faded, the chariots fell silent, and the stones were repurposed for newer constructions. Yet, the ghost track remained. Even in the 20th century, archaeologists could trace the outline of this once magnificent structure. Excavations in 1988 revealed sections of the wall, track, and seating tiers, breathing life back into the forgotten Hippodrome of Berytus. Today, efforts continue to preserve what remains of the Hippodrome of Berytus. It stands as a reminder of a bygone era. A time of roaring crowds, thundering hooves, and the vibrant spirit of Roman Berytus. Close your eyes for a moment. Can you still hear the echoes?
