Step onto the San Jacinto Boulevard. There it stands the Recreational Sports Center a beacon of fitness and fun. This isn’t just a gym. It’s a piece of UT Austin history.

Since 1916 RecSports has been shaping campus life. It began with Berry M Whitaker promoting athletics for everyone. Imagine intramural games on old Clark Field. Then came Gregory Gym and dedicated intramural fields. Growth led to Whitaker Fields in 1967. Expansion continued with a 1980 renovation adding more fields.

The Recreational Sports Center itself opened later. It boasts 120000 square feet of space. Three basketball courts or six volleyball courts await. Seven courts offer handball racquetball and wallyball action. A huge weight training and cardio room challenges fitness enthusiasts. There are multi-purpose dance studios too. Even a martial arts room and massage chairs add to the experience.

But the Rec Center is more than just facilities. It’s about the people. Over 900 students find jobs here annually. RecSports returns over $2 million annually in student wages. Seventeen scholarships are awarded each year. The Rec Center is a vibrant hub. It is a place where students athletes and the community connect.

The Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex nearby also plays a key role. This outdoor area hosts intramural events and sport clubs. It offers natural and synthetic fields for many sports. Its story is one of growth adaptation and dedication to recreational excellence.

The Recreational Sports Center isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the importance of recreation and community. It’s a place where memories are made and fitness goals are achieved. It’s a place to experience UT Austin’s rich legacy. It’s a place to get active and have fun.
