Tucked away on Jalan Ibadat, a street whose very name means “street of worship” in Malay, stands Al Firdaus Mosque. This unassuming mosque, nestled off Old Choa Chu Kang Road, holds a special place in the hearts of the community. Al Firdaus, meaning “Paradise” in Arabic, truly lives up to its name as a sanctuary of peace and spiritual growth. Al Firdaus Mosque has witnessed the transformation of this area from a rural landscape dotted with kampongs to the modern landscape of today. Originally built in 1962, Al Firdaus served the surrounding kampongs of Bulim, Lam San, Keat Hong, Kampong Tengah, and Kampong Cutforth. Imagine the scene in 1968. Haji Ya’acob bin Mohamed, then Minister of State, officially opened the mosque. The air buzzed with excitement as residents from these villages gathered to witness this momentous occasion. The mosque, funded by the community’s generous donations, became a symbol of their shared faith and unity. Over the years, Al Firdaus Mosque has undergone several renovations. In 1983, the mosque management organized a sports event and other fundraising activities to support a $30,000 renovation project. Later, in the nineties, another charity drive raised $100,000 for further upgrades. This community spirit ensured that Al Firdaus could continue to serve its growing congregation. The 1999 renovation, overseen by MUIS (Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura), significantly expanded the mosque’s capacity to accommodate up to 200 people. This allowed Al Firdaus to offer more services, including religious classes for adults. Al Firdaus Mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience and generosity of the community it serves. It’s a place where history whispers through the walls, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and community.
