Gazing upon Schlosskirche Lockwitz, one might wonder about the stories it holds. This unique church, nestled in the Dresden neighborhood of Lockwitz, shares a remarkable connection with the adjacent Lockwitz Castle. Schlosskirche Lockwitz isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to the intertwined history of faith and nobility in this region. Its origins trace back to a Catholic chapel, possibly dating back to the 13th century. The Reformation brought change, and the chapel was eventually closed. However, in 1622, Johann Georg von Osterhausen, the lord of the manor, rediscovered the chapel and transformed it into an Evangelical Lutheran church. This marked the beginning of Schlosskirche Lockwitz as we know it. Just a year later, Lockwitz gained its own independent congregation. The church we see today largely owes its form to a significant renovation initiated by Gotthelf Friedrich von Schönberg between 1699 and 1703. This renovation saw a remarkable architectural feat. The eastern church tower was dismantled, and the western wing of Lockwitz Castle was ingeniously repurposed as the new church tower. This created a unique direct link between the castle and the church. The 37-meter tower, adorned with a Baroque cupola and lantern, stands as a symbol of this union. Inside, the church holds a treasure. The sandstone altar, crafted around 1660 from a 1627 epitaph, tells stories of its own. The altar’s predella features a depiction of the Last Supper. It is flanked by representations of the Annunciation and the Baptism of Christ. Two Maxen marble columns frame the main section, showcasing the crucifixion. Above, the resurrection scene is watched over by figures representing Faith, Hope, and Love. Throughout its history, Schlosskirche Lockwitz has witnessed significant moments. It served as King Frederick II of Prussia’s headquarters during the Seven Years’ War. It provided solace and care as a military hospital in the Napoleonic Wars. In more recent times, it underwent several renovations. The church was restored in 1930, 1952, and again from 1993 to 1996, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Schlosskirche Lockwitz embodies a unique blend of history, architecture, and faith. It’s a place where the stories of the past resonate within the present, inviting visitors to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Dresden’s heritage.
