Gone but not forgotten. That’s the story of Église Saint-Barthélémy. Imagine this spot. Right here on the Boulevard du Palais stood a church. A truly significant church. For centuries Église Saint-Barthélémy thrived. It was more than just a place of worship.

Église Saint-Barthélémy’s roots stretch back to the 5th century. A small chapel dedicated to the apostle Bartholomew. Hugues Capet expanded it around 965. It became the royal parish church. Its parishioners numbered around 2300 by 1300. A remarkable number for the time.

This wasn’t just any church. It held a treasure trove of relics. Relics of Saint Malo arrived in the late 10th century. They sought refuge here from Norman pirate raids in Brittany. They weren’t alone. Other Breton saints’ relics found sanctuary within its walls. A true haven of faith.

Église Saint-Barthélémy wasn’t static. It was renovated in 1730 and 1736. King Louis XVI ordered a complete reconstruction in 1772. The French Revolution brought an abrupt end to the ambitious project. Only the classical portal designed by Mathurin Cherpitel was completed.

The revolution also sealed Église Saint-Barthélémy’s fate. In 1790 it lost its status as a parish church. It was then sold as national property. It met its tragic end in 1791. Demolition followed.

The site saw other structures rise and fall. A theatre and two covered passages replaced the church. These too were eventually demolished in 1858. Today the Paris Commercial Court stands where Église Saint-Barthélémy once stood. A silent testament to its rich history. Its legacy lives on in stories like these. A poignant reminder of Paris’s ever-changing landscape.
