Kneeling before the icon of Saint Paraskeva, a young girl whispered her hopes for the future. This is the Serbische orthodoxe Gemeinde der ehrwürdigen Mutter Paraskeva von Serbien. It serves as a spiritual haven for the Serbian Orthodox community here in Karlsruhe. The Serbische orthodoxe Gemeinde der ehrwürdigen Mutter Paraskeva von Serbien has a unique and fascinating history. The first Serbian Orthodox liturgy in Karlsruhe and Baden took place on January 26, 1975. It was led by Father Ozren Tucakov from Stuttgart. He regularly organized services in both Karlsruhe and Freiburg. The parish in Karlsruhe officially formed on March 20, 1992. The suggestion came from then-Father Slobodan Miljevic of Stuttgart. The parish’s boundaries touch those of Stuttgart, Mannheim, Villingen-Schwenningen, and Freiburg. The first priest to serve the newly established parish was Father Milorad Jovanovic. He held this position from 1992 until 2004. Between 2004 and 2007, priests from Stuttgart temporarily administered the parish. Since 2007, Archpriest Aleksandar Skoric has led the Serbische orthodoxe Gemeinde der ehrwürdigen Mutter Paraskeva von Serbien. The parish operates in accordance with the constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The church building itself has a fascinating story. Located in Karlsruhe’s Nordstadt, the building was jointly purchased from the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches in 2012. Originally constructed in the 1950s by the US Army, it served as a church for the American garrison until 1990. Following the army’s withdrawal, it transitioned into an ecumenical center. In early 2012, Father Aleksandar Skoric and the church council initiated negotiations to acquire the church. By June 2012, the purchase agreement was signed. The church became the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The interior underwent extensive renovations to meet the specific needs of Orthodox worship. A candle room was added, along with a large central chandelier and six smaller ones. The iconostasis, bishop’s throne, Holy Sepulchre, choir stalls, and icon stands were installed. The intricate woodwork was crafted by the Petrovic Atelier from Belgrade. The icons were painted by Deacon Nikola Lubradic and Professor Goran Janjicijevic, also from Belgrade. Bishop Konstantin of Central Europe conducted the church’s minor consecration on September 29, 2012. This ceremony included the placement of the cross on the bell tower. The iconostasis itself was consecrated by the Serbian Patriarch on February 9, 2014. The Serbische orthodoxe Gemeinde der ehrwürdigen Mutter Paraskeva von Serbien continues to be a vibrant center of faith and community. It stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the Serbian Orthodox faithful in Karlsruhe.
