Seven thousand souls call Le Canet home. This Marseille neighborhood nestled in the 14th arrondissement boasts a rich history. Its name derives from “cannae” the Provençal word for reeds. Ancient marshes once surrounded Le Canet. The Caravelle stream a now-buried waterway played a key role.

Le Canet’s story unfolds over centuries. In the 11th century records mention “In Caneto”. The 13th century saw “Vallis de Canneto”. By 1851 the spelling had settled to Le Canet. Other theories exist. Some believe it refers to a small path or canal.

The neighborhood wasn’t always densely populated. For a long time Le Canet was dotted with large estates. Wealthy families owned sprawling properties. One notable estate “La Floride” hosted a vibrant literary salon in the 17th century. Writers and scholars gathered there. Guillaume du Vair a renowned jurist was its owner. His motto “Florentem Florem Florida Flora Fleat” reflects the estate’s beauty. The area’s industrial evolution began later.

The arrival of the railroad changed Le Canet. It brought industry. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw an industrial boom. Breweries oil refineries and soap factories sprang up. The Marseille-Canet freight station opened in 1848. It occupied a significant portion of the neighborhood. The station’s eventual closure will free up land for urban development. A new park is planned.

Le Canet’s history isn’t just about industry. It also bears witness to darker times. The Boulevard du Commandant Finat-Duclos a seemingly quiet street is infamous. Several violent events unfolded there. The “Tuerie du Bar du Téléphone” in 1978 stands out. Three lieutenants of Francis le Belge a notorious Marseille godfather were executed in 1972. In 1981 Jacques Castagna “Pierrot La Boulange” met his end there. And in 2010 Redouane Djouder “Djoujou” disappeared. His disappearance remains a mystery.

Today Le Canet is a vibrant community. It has its own distinctive character. The architecture from the HBM Ambrosini housing development is noteworthy. Built in 1937 it reflects the Art Deco style. This building provided much-needed housing in the industrial era. Le Canet is also home to the Station Alexandre a former oil refinery transformed into a cultural center. It stands as a testament to the neighborhood’s past and present.

Le Canet’s story is one of transformation. From its marshy origins to its industrial past and its modern identity Le Canet is a living testament to the enduring spirit of Marseille. A neighborhood in constant flux yet rich in its history. Its tale continues to unfold.
