In 1961, this tower became the home for KVIL-FM, the FM sister station to KVIL-AM, which was founded in 1960. Interestingly, the name KVIL holds a clue to its location – the “VIL” stands for “Village,” signifying its roots in Highland Park Village. KVIL’s initial format favored middle of the road music, making it a favorite for a certain generation. However, the power of radio was not only measured by the strength of the signals but also by the personalities on the airways. KVIL-AM-FM’s success stemmed from a dynamic mix of talent including Ron Chapman, a Dallas radio legend, whose infectious enthusiasm and showmanship made him a household name. In the 1970s, KVIL-AM-FM, known for its “adult contemporary” format, was a top-rated station, captivating listeners throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It even broadcast the morning show for 90 minutes on TV each year, highlighting extravagant stunts, showcasing the station’s dedication to entertainment. KVIL-AM-FM’s fame reached its zenith in 1987 when Infinity Broadcasting acquired it, a testament to its dominance in the market.
