In 1999, the silver screen dimmed for the last time at the Coronet Cinema. Today, we stand before its grand successor, the New Wine Church. You might be surprised to learn that New Wine Church wasn’t always a place of worship. This building actually began its life in 1937 as the Odeon Theatre. Designed by George Coles, the building boasted a sleek Art Deco style. Imagine the excitement as audiences flocked to see Ralph Reader in “The Gang Show” on opening night! The Odeon thrived for decades, undergoing a modern makeover in the 1960s. However, like many grand old cinemas, it eventually closed its doors in 1981. It had a brief revival as the Coronet Cinema, even showcasing the iconic “Return of the Jedi”. But by 1999, its days as a cinema were over. New Wine Church, a vibrant Pentecostal congregation, saw an opportunity to breathe new life into this historic space. They acquired the building in 2001. Today, New Wine Church, also known as Gateway House, stands as a testament to transformation and renewal. The church has preserved much of the building’s architectural splendour while adapting it for worship and community engagement. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the ever-changing landscape of London, the past can find new purpose and meaning.
