Overlooking the shimmering Bosphorus, Vahdettin Köşk whispers tales of Ottoman history. The Vahdettin Köşk, also known as the Çengelköy Köşk, stands as a rebuilt structure, a concrete echo of its former wooden glory. This elegant pavilion in Istanbul’s Çengelköy neighborhood was once the residence of Şehzade Mehmed Vahdettin, before he ascended the throne as the last Ottoman Sultan. Designed by the French-Ottoman architect Alexander Vallaury and commissioned by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the original Vahdettin Köşk was a beautiful timber mansion. It was a gift from the Sultan to his brother, Mehmed Vahdettin, a place of solace and reflection amidst the political turmoil of the late Ottoman Empire. Vahdettin resided here until his tumultuous reign ended in 1922. Forced into exile, he left behind this beloved pavilion, entrusting it to one of his odalisques. The estate was eventually parceled and sold. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the Vahdettin Köşk underwent a dramatic transformation. The original structure, along with several neighboring historical timber mansions, was demolished in 2013 and replaced with a concrete replica. While the new building superficially resembles the original, it lacks the historical accuracy and architectural details of its predecessor. Today, the Vahdettin Köşk serves as an official residence for the President of Turkey and a state guest house. The grounds boast a greenhouse, a decorative pool, and even a helipad, modern amenities in stark contrast to the pavilion’s historical past. While the original trees were felled during the reconstruction, the grounds have been replanted with a variety of species. The Vahdettin Köşk, though a replica, continues to hold a significant place in Istanbul’s landscape, a reminder of a bygone era and the last Ottoman Sultan who called it home.
