“Pavilion of Greatness”. Does that sound intriguing? We’re standing in Daejeon Park, a little slice of South Korea right here in Seattle.

Daejeon Park is named after Seattle’s sister city, Daejeon, in South Korea. For years the park was known as Taejon Park. The city updated the spelling to better reflect the actual pronunciation of Daejeon.

This park offers a unique blend of open space and Korean culture. Seattle Parks and Recreation operates Daejeon Park. It sits adjacent to Sturgus Park on Beacon Hill’s north side.

The park’s centerpiece is a beautiful Korean-style pagoda. It’s officially named Taejonjeong. The pagoda was gifted to Seattle in 1998. Roadside America calls it the “Pavilion of Greatness”. Take a moment to admire the intricate paintings.

Daejeon Park also features a commemorative plaque and a peaceful walkway. Sunset magazine calls it a haven for quiet contemplation. The park has appeared in published walking tours of Seattle.

In 2010, the park was a site of protest. Korean community members gathered here to protest North Korea’s bombardment of Yeonpyeongdo.

In 2016, Daejeon Park was a starting point for the I AM Procession. Activist Kimisha Turner organized this event to raise awareness of colorism. Participants marched to the Northwest African American Museum.

The Korean American Coalition even hosted a park clean-up event here in 2019. This was part of Korean American Service Day.

Daejeon Park is a great place for a picnic. There is plenty of open lawn. You can also enjoy views of Mount Rainier on a clear day.

Oddly, Daejeon Park doesn’t have any benches. Only two large rocks offer seating. This park may not be the most exciting, but it is pretty. It is best when flowers are blooming or leaves are changing.

Daejeon Park offers a tranquil escape. It is a reminder of Seattle’s global connections. Take a moment to appreciate this unique space. It links Seattle to its sister city across the Pacific.
