Isn’t it fascinating that Mayfair Park, a local treasure, has such a rich history. Mayfair Park is nestled in the neighborhood of the same name. It offers a blend of recreation and community spirit. This 3-acre park, one block north of Kilbourn and Montrose, is more than just a green space.
Let’s step back in time. The seeds of Mayfair Park were sown in 1913. The Irving Park District ordered a survey along Sunnyside Avenue. Land acquisition took several years. By 1931, the park boasted a playfield. Separate playgrounds for boys and girls were added. A wading pool offered relief on hot summer days. Clarence Hatzfeld designed the fieldhouse. He was known for his work on north- and northwest-side buildings.
During the Depression, Hatzfeld joined the Chicago Park District. This happened when 22 independent park agencies merged in 1934. In 1936, he renovated the Mayfair Park Fieldhouse. He enclosed the entry loggia. This provided more indoor space. Additional land was acquired in 1944. By 1947, horseshoe, shuffleboard, and tennis courts were added. The landscape was redesigned in 1970 to expand athletic fields. A soft surface playground was installed in 1989. In 2007, Mayfair Park received a state-of-the-art ADA accessible playground.
Today, Mayfair Park has a soft-surface playground. A spraypool provides refreshing fun. A basketball court calls to players of all ages. Two junior baseball fields host budding athletes. The fieldhouse includes a clubroom, preschool room, kitchen, and auditorium.
