Why is Teuhtli called the “venerable lord”? Let’s uncover the secrets of this imposing volcano. Right here in the southeast of Mexico City, Teuhtli stands as a significant landmark, both geographically and in the hearts of the local people. Its Nahuatl name, sometimes given the honorific Teuctzin, translates to “venerable lord,” reflecting the deep respect it commands. Teuhtli is a shield volcano, meaning its diameter is much wider than its height. Even so, at 2,710 meters tall, it dominates the skyline, visible from miles around. Teuhtli isn’t just a geological formation. It’s woven into the very fabric of ancient legends. Tales depict Teuhtli as a warrior, sometimes fighting alongside Popocatepetl, other times against him, all for the love of Iztaccihuatl. On a clear day, you can even see these two volcanic rivals to the south and southeast. Teuhtli played a crucial role in the lives of the people of Milpa Alta. It served as a communal border, a source of sulfur, and a ceremonial center. The volcano was revered by the locals, who continued to honor Tloque Nahuaque, a deity sometimes described as the Nahua “One God above All Gods,” well into the 18th century. Even today, the volcano continues to be a site of reverence. Every year on May 3rd, the Catholic Feast of the Holy Cross, a mass is held on Teuhtli’s slopes, with celebrants primarily coming from the nearby Santa Cruz neighborhood of Villa Milpa Alta. This annual pilgrimage marks a continuation of ancient traditions and a testament to Teuhtli’s enduring presence in the community. Imagine the countless generations who have looked up at Teuhtli, their lives intertwined with its presence. Teuhtli has been a silent witness to centuries of history, its slopes echoing with the stories and beliefs of the people who call this area home.
