The original Chapelle Sainte-Bathilde was built in 1915. It stood on the site of a former barn. Abbé Bonno and Abbé Danger envisioned a place of worship here. The chapel was named after Sainte Bathilde. She was the wife of Clovis II and Queen of the Franks. She died in Chelles in 680.
Over time, the Chapelle Sainte-Bathilde became too small. It could not accommodate the growing parish. The location was also not ideal. It was hidden from the main road. In 1989, the roof needed complete reconstruction. Despite these challenges, the community persevered.
In 2016, plans began for a new church. The Chapelle Sainte-Bathilde was to be replaced by a larger center. This new center would include an 800-seat church. It would also include a chapel dedicated to Sainte Bathilde. The old chapel was deconsecrated. It was demolished to make way for the new construction.
The new Chapelle Sainte-Bathilde aims to be more visible. Its entrance will face a rehabilitated square. This will connect it to Chelles’ main commercial area. The project includes a pastoral center and residences for priests.
The new Chapelle Sainte-Bathilde will house relics of Sainte Bathilde. This makes it a pilgrimage site. A small museum space will also be included.
A statue of Sainte Bathilde stands in the ecclésial center. This statue is by Jean-Charles Detallante. It symbolizes Sainte Bathilde’s journey from slavery to royalty. The broken chain in her hand represents freedom.
The project “Eglise Sainte Bathilde, cap sur 2025” unites the community. Parishioners wear T-shirts with this slogan. This shows their excitement for the new church.
The current church is located near the Chelles Gournay train station. It will feature a large bell tower. The inauguration is planned for December 2025. The church will be a place of pilgrimage. It will house relics of Sainte Bathilde.
