Nestled in the southeastern expanse of Budapest, the XVIII. kerület, also known as Pestszentlőrinc-Pestszentimre, unfolds a captivating tale. This district, a blend of two formerly separate towns, Pestszentlőrinc and Pestszentimre, became part of Budapest in 1950. Today, the XVIII. kerület is home to approximately 100,000 residents, with Pestszentlőrinc housing about 80% of the population. The district boasts a unique mix of residential areas, characterized by single-family homes, several sprawling housing estates, and a few industrial sites. The XVIII. kerület is also home to key institutions. Budapest’s international airport, Ferihegy Airport, connects the city to the world. The Hungarian Meteorological Service, along with the Central Atmospheric Institute, are also located within the district’s boundaries. This dynamic area holds significant cultural and historical weight within Budapest. Interestingly, the district has witnessed significant population growth. Up to 1900, it was sparsely populated. A steady influx of new residents started in the 1890s, continuing until 1920. Then, between 1920 and 1970, the population skyrocketed. This period of growth was interrupted only by World War II, after which the district saw a slight population decline. From the 1970s onwards, the population stabilized, exhibiting a very slow increase that continues to this day. The XVIII. kerület showcases the vibrant spirit of Budapest, blending residential charm with vital national institutions. It holds the stories of its past, the dynamism of its present, and the promise of its future.
