This tranquil place is a haven of peace and quiet, nestled in the heart of Ismaning, Oberbayern. The Alter Friedhof Ismaning is more than just a cemetery. It is a repository of history, a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. Established in 1873 by the then-mayor Nikolaus Zacherl, the cemetery has witnessed the passing of generations and served as a place of remembrance and solace for over a century. While walking through the hallowed grounds, you can see graves that date back to the early 20th century. One of the most striking features of the Alter Friedhof Ismaning is its late classical Funeral Hall, topped with a hipped roof and a spire. This structure, erected in the same era as the cemetery itself, stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the period. You’ll also find a cemetery cross with a marble plaque on a pedestal. This cross, inscribed with the year 1873 marks the original date of the cemetery. Despite its age, the Alter Friedhof Ismaning was expanded in 1947 by mayor Andreas Schweiger, showcasing its continuous importance for Ismaning. Today, the cemetery boasts 898 burial plots, a clear testament to the long and enduring bond between the community and this historical landmark. And that is not all. The Aussegnungshalle, which is a funeral hall, received a major makeover in recent times. Since 2001, a bronze bell situated on top of the Aussegnungshalle signals mourners when burials take place.
