“Coysevox” is the name echoing through Lyon’s history. Rue Coysevox is a short street in the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse district. It links Rue René-Leynaud and Rue des Capucins.
This street pays homage to Antoine Coysevox. He was a sculptor born in Lyon in 1640. He died in Paris in 1720. The name Coysevox has been associated with this street since 1821. Interestingly, Rue Coysevox extends southward. It becomes Rue Coustou. This honors the Coustou brothers, Guillaume and Nicolas. They were also sculptors from Lyon. They were nephews of Coysevox.
Rue Coysevox slopes gently downward. It runs from Rue Leynaud to Rue des Capucins. Rue Coustou is a slight continuation toward Rue Romarin. Traffic flows in one direction. It moves from north to south.
The east side of Rue Coysevox has simpler, lower buildings. Look closely at number 1. You may notice the pretty doorway. Sadly, it is damaged. The west side is more typical. It features two fairly tall houses. Rue Donnée separates them. The second house shows a 19th-century style. The first house is probably older.
Besides its namesake, Rue Coysevox has a unique history. The street was within the walls of convents. These belonged to the Capuchins and Sainte Ursule. The Ursulines’ old buildings date back to 1702. They occupy the east side of the street. Rue Coysevox was quickly urbanized. This happened after the revolution in the early 19th century.
Antoine Coysevox achieved greater fame in Paris. His sculptures can be seen in the Louvre. You can also find them at Les Invalides. Visit the Palace of Versailles to see more. A statue of Notre Dame de Grâce stands in Saint Nizier. A bust of Coysevox resides in a parking lot. It’s near the cathedral. This statue by P. Besnard shows him with a hammer.
Coysevox also taught the Coustou brothers. Their street is a continuation of Rue Coysevox. Today, the street is home to various establishments. You’ll find a police station here. There is also “la compagnie des tee shirt”. And do not forget the bar Lax.
