Botanical Garden

Hidden within Aarhus, the Botanical Garden awaits discovery. This isn’t just any park. It’s a living museum, a testament to nature’s artistry, and a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle. Founded in 1873, the Aarhus Botanical Gardens started as an experimental ground for fruit trees and other useful plants. Originally, it was a collaboration between Aarhus University and the forward-thinking Garden Society of Jutland. Their goal was to introduce new and robust plant varieties to local gardens. Today, the Botanical Garden covers 21.5 hectares. The area embodies various landscapes, from tranquil ponds to vibrant flowerbeds. The garden boasts a rich collection of plant species, many meticulously labelled in both Latin and Danish. You can stroll through a diverse range of habitats, each showcasing Denmark’s unique flora. Explore the specialized section dedicated to medicinal plants, discover the rockery with its collection of mountain plants from around the world. The modern greenhouse center, initially designed in 1970, has been renovated and expanded to include a breathtaking tropical hothouse. This renovation, completed in 2014, was a combined effort of Aarhus Municipality, Aarhus University, and Realdania, with C. F. Møller Architects leading the design. The Botanical Garden has faced challenges, particularly regarding budget cuts that threatened its upkeep. But thanks to the dedicated efforts of the “Botanisk Haves Venner” (Friends of the Botanical Gardens), the rose gardens and arboretum continue to thrive. The Hessel Brook, a branch of the Aarhus Stream, flows through the garden, adding to its serene atmosphere.
