Let’s delve into Burg Morenhoven’s past. Burg Morenhoven is a moated castle. It sits on Morenhoven’s southern edge. Morenhoven is part of Swisttal. The castle showcases a two-part design. There is a lower bailey and a main castle. Wide ponds surround it. These ponds get water from the Mühlenbach. The Mühlenbach is a tributary of the Swist. The manor house still stands on an island. Parts of the moat system have been filled. This occurred in the outer bailey. The outer bailey was once used for agriculture.
The castle’s construction history remains under study. Some say it started as a fortified farmstead. This would date back to the 9th century. Others place its origin in the 12th century. The gate tower was built in the late 15th century. Hessian soldiers destroyed the castle during the Thirty Years’ War. The new building that stands today was started in 1682. In 1827, a single-story gallery wing expanded the original three-wing main castle. This created a four-wing complex. The gate tower was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. The manor house is made of plastered brick. It is painted in Maria-Theresia yellow. This color dates from the 19th century. The farm buildings are not plastered. The baroque garden was laid out in the 18th century.
The Lords of Morenhoven, first mentioned in 1229 with Wilhelm de Morinhovin, originally owned the castle. In 1299, the castle was gifted to the Archbishops of Cologne. In 1345, the Archbishop of Cologne, Walram von Jülich, granted the castle to the knight Heinrich von Itter. Other feudal lords included Scherffgin and Beissel von Gymnich. In 1503, Wilhelm Beissel von Gymnich sold the knight’s seat to Johann Schall von Bell. The Schall von Bell family owned the moated castle until 1806. Joseph Jordans acquired Burg Morenhoven in that year. He was the mayor of Ollheim. Franz von Jordans owns the castle today.
The privately owned property is sometimes used for cultural events. These include piano concerts and cabaret. It is also used for private celebrations.
So, as you stand here, remember the echoes of lords and soldiers. Think of the melodies that once filled these halls. Morenhoven offers a blend of rural charm and historical depth.
