“A való anyag teremtett minket” the inscription proclaims. This quote graces the Rózsa Ferenc emlékkút. It translates to “The real material created us.” What do you think of that statement?

Welcome. We’re standing before the Rózsa Ferenc emlékkút. It is a memorial fountain. It stands as a tribute to Ferenc Rózsa.

Rózsa was a communist activist and journalist. He fought against fascism during World War II. Rózsa was born in 1906. He died in 1942 at the young age of 35.

After the communist takeover, Rózsa became a martyr figure. Books and novels appeared about him. Many public spaces were named after him. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences later advised against this.

The Rózsa Ferenc emlékkút was erected in 1966. It was created by the artist Sándor Mikus. The fountain is a rare communist-era artwork that still stands. Many similar works have been removed. Some were quietly demolished. Others were moved to Statue Park.

Rózsa was the first editor of Szabad Nép. It was the illegal central organ of the Hungarian Communist Party. Rózsa was captured in 1942. He was killed during interrogation after weeks of torture.

The fountain features a poem. It speaks of being molded by a “terrible society”. It also speaks of standing for humanity. The poem’s bold message is surprising for its time. It dates back to the “thundering socialism” era. The verse and the plate’s edge share a striking resemblance.

The Rózsa Ferenc emlékkút reminds us of a complex past. It stands as a testament to Rózsa’s life. It also represents a time of political upheaval.
