Ever wondered about the story behind this magnificent hall? This is McCaw Hall. It stands as a beacon of performing arts in Seattle. McCaw Hall is more than just a building. It is a testament to Seattle’s cultural spirit.

Originally, this site was donated to the city. David Denny gave it for public use. That was back in 1886. Fast forward to 1928. The Civic Auditorium opened its doors. Seattle’s only female mayor Bertha K. Landes dedicated it. The Civic Center included the Ice Arena and Civic Field.

In the 1930s, symphony concerts became a regular feature. The 1940s saw famous artists grace the stage. San Francisco Opera and Marian Anderson performed here.

To prepare for the 1962 World’s Fair, the auditorium was upgraded. It became the Seattle Opera House. The grand opening on April 21, 1962, was spectacular. Van Cliburn played Rachmaninoff. Igor Stravinsky conducted the Seattle Symphony.

The Seattle Opera was founded in 1963. Its first season was in 1964. Pacific Northwest Ballet followed in 1973. Seattle Symphony moved to Benaroya Hall in 1998.

The most dramatic transformation occurred in the early 2000s. Craig McCaw and his brothers donated $20 million. The renovated building was named after their mother Marion Oliver McCaw. LMN Architects managed the renovation. McCaw Hall reopened in June 2003.

McCaw Hall features the Susan Brotman Auditorium. It seats 2,900 people. There is also the Nesholm Family Lecture Hall. It seats 380. The Kreielsheimer Promenade serves as an inviting entry.

LMN designed the hall with elegance and functionality in mind. The luminous glass wall is a distinctive feature. Environmentally sustainable designs were incorporated. These minimize resource use and waste.

Each year, the Ballet and Opera stage about 150 performances here. McCaw Hall also hosts concerts and lectures. It is a venue for community and corporate events.

McCaw Hall’s design emphasizes a seamless blend with its surroundings. The five-story glass curtain wall is expressive. The interior boasts open lobbies. They create a welcoming transition.

The Susan Brotman Auditorium has improved sightlines and acoustics. The walls were moved inward. This created a more intimate setting. Balconies were brought closer to the stage.

McCaw Hall is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place where art thrives. It is a place where memories are made. This hall embodies Seattle’s commitment to culture. It ensures that the performing arts have a premier stage. Its history reflects the city’s evolution. From a simple auditorium to a world-class venue, McCaw Hall’s story is one of vision and dedication.
