Here stands Mount Zion Church of God in Christ a testament to faith. It also reflects community spirit. Mount Zion’s story began in 1945. Deacon and Sister Lewis Hinton opened their home at 439 Ottawa Street for worship. They were a saved sanctified and Holy Ghost couple. They contacted Bishop C.L. Anderson for a pastor. Elder DeLewis Sanders was sent and became Mount Zion’s first pastor.
Under Elder Sanders’ leadership the church thrived. The Lord’s presence was evident. Many souls were saved. The 1950s brought an economic crisis to the city. Many members sought employment elsewhere. This led to a decline in membership. Yet the Lord blessed Mount Zion. It prospered and recovered. The church continued its upward march.
In September 1963 Elder B.T. Stephen was called to Flint Michigan. Before leaving he recommended Elder George M. Bennett. He saw Bennett as a qualified leader. State Bishop Charles I. Johnson installed Elder George M. Bennett as pastor in October.
August 1981 was a pivotal moment. Members discussed buying a larger building. The former Evangelical Covenant Church at 188 West Muskegon Avenue was available. The members were enthusiastic. They toured the property. Afterward they pledged individual contributions. In October 1982 the building was purchased. The Inaugural Service took place on November 6th.
Mount Zion Church of God in Christ celebrated its Golden Anniversary in September 1995. The mortgage burning ceremony occurred in 1998. It happened during the church’s 21st Annual Old Fashion Christian Family Reunion service.
After 43 years of faithful service Administrative Assistant George M. Bennett passed away on March 10 2007. He went home to be with his Lord.
Elder Duane E. Bennett was installed on June 8 2007. Bishop Marvin C. Pryor officiated. He was the prelate of the Third Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Southwest Michigan. Mount Zion Church of God in Christ stands as a symbol of resilience. It also embodies unwavering faith. It shows a deep commitment to its community.
