Consecrated ground, whispered secrets, and soaring stained glass. This is the Santuario San José del Altillo. Right here in Coyoacán, this modernist marvel stands as a testament to faith, art, and architectural ingenuity. The Santuario San José del Altillo isn’t just a church. It’s a story etched in stone and glass, a story I’m excited to share with you. The Santuario San José del Altillo was born from a collaboration of brilliant minds. Architects Félix Candela and Enrique de la Mora, along with engineer Fernando López Carmona, joined forces in 1958 to create this masterpiece. It’s also known as the Capilla de Soledad, dedicated to the Virgin of Solitude. But the name San José del Altillo comes from the old hacienda that once stood on this land. The last heir donated the land in the early 20th century, paving the way for this spiritual sanctuary. Originally, de la Mora envisioned transparent windows, offering clear views of the surrounding gardens. However, parishioners found the view distracting. They commissioned artist Kitzia Hofmann to create the stunning stained glass that now adorns the Santuario San José del Altillo. These vibrant depictions of the Holy Spirit are truly breathtaking. They add another layer of beauty to this already remarkable structure. Inside, you’ll find another artistic treasure. A sculpture of Our Lady of Solitude, crafted by Kitzia’s husband, German artist Herbert Hofmann. These artistic elements, combined with the unique architecture, led the National Fine Arts Institute (INBAL) to declare the Santuario San José del Altillo a protected artistic heritage site. This designation signifies its immense cultural and artistic value, granting it the highest level of protection in Mexico City. Resting in the crypt below is Blessed Concepción Cabrera de Armida. She moved to the hacienda in 1918, adding another layer of historical significance to this sacred site.
