But a group of 12 artists, many from Oyun Atölyesi, refused to let that happen. They saw the potential within the dilapidated building. In 2013, they took on the massive task of renovating the space. They transformed it into the cultural center we know today as Moda Sahnesi. The renovation was extensive. Everything from the old décor to the ventilation system was replaced. They built new electrical, plumbing, and fire safety systems. They also created a state-of-the-art stage and technical infrastructure. The team prioritized acoustics. They wanted to ensure a high-quality auditory experience. Moda Sahnesi features multiple performance spaces. The Büyük Salon can be configured to seat 263 people or hold 650 standing. The Stüdyo Sahne hosts smaller plays, acoustic concerts, and workshops. And yes, there’s still a cinema! The Başka Sinema screens independent films, keeping the original spirit of the building alive. Moda Sahnesi is more than just a performance venue. It’s a community hub. The founding team wanted to create a space that encourages interaction and participation. The café, for instance, opens onto a bustling passage. This design seamlessly integrates the venue into the surrounding neighborhood. The team’s dedication to preserving the building’s history is evident throughout. They’ve taken great care to highlight the original structure whenever possible.
