Before the roar of the crowds, before the electrifying energy of a football match, the Jardines del Hipódromo was a quieter place. It was a central square, the heart of a growing neighborhood in Montevideo. Then, in 1957, the landscape changed forever. The Jardines del Hipódromo stadium arose, transforming the square into a sporting arena. This is the home of Danubio F.C., the first stadium in Uruguay named after a woman. In May 2017, the club honored María Mincheff de Lazaroff, mother of the club’s founders, Miguel and Juan Lazaroff. The stadium’s official name now reflects her contribution: Estadio Jardines del Hipódromo María Mincheff de Lazaroff. The stadium has seen continuous renovations since 1997. It has grown and evolved, yet retains a unique charm. A natural palm tree, a silent witness to the stadium’s history, still stands within its walls. The Jardines del Hipódromo stadium has a capacity of 18,000. However, for high-risk matches, attendance is limited to 10,000 for safety. Imagine the tension, the excitement as the crowd roars its support for Danubio F.C. The energy here is palpable, a testament to the passion for football in Uruguay.
