Did New Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church always stand tall and proud, a beacon of faith in Dallas? The answer lies hidden in its humble beginnings. The New Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church, as we see it today, is a far cry from its origin story. It all began in the winter of 1948. Five women, members of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, yearned for a place of worship closer to their homes. They envisioned a church that would serve their community, nestled in the heart of the farmland settlements of lower White Rock. These five women, Callie Bonner, Armentra Bonner, Janie Suber, Eunice Suber, and Margaret Robertson, took their dream to Rev. T.J. Jernigan. With his guidance and the support of the Greater Rising Star District Association, New Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church was born. The first meetings were held in the home of Bro. and Sis. William Suber. As their congregation grew, a testament to their dedication, they moved their gatherings to a tent. It was a community effort, a testament to their faith. They even repurposed donated bent nails, straightened with care, to build their first church building on Coit Road, land generously provided by Bro. Emanuel Bonner and Sis. Armentra Bonner. The New Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church continued to thrive, relocating once due to the expansion of Central Avenue and later finding a new home on Shepherd Road. Through the decades, the church expanded, a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of its community. The New Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church stands as a symbol of resilience, a beacon of faith built on the dreams of five women who dared to believe. Their legacy lives on, echoing through the halls of this sacred space, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
